I ran across an article today about Busy Philips (whom I love) and sprinkled in there with talk about nail polish and self-care was a mention of her love for Reiki! It's always so fun when I see or hear someone causally mention energy healing, because it gives me hope that it is slowly but surely making its way into the world of "normal". There are so many wellness practices that can contribute to an effective self-care routine, and energy healing like Reiki is an amazing and low-risk option that not everyone is aware of. Some days it seems like everyone I talk to is familiar with energy healing, and other days people look at me like I have three heads at the mention of the word "Reiki". One of my goals is to help introduce energy healing to "every day people" because I honestly believe it's not as crazy and out there as people may initially think. So the more it is talked about in interviews and casual conversations with people, the better.
Reiki is a form of energy medicine used to activate the natural healing processes of your body and support physical and emotional well-being. Reiki works with the unseen, universal "life force energy" that flows through us. If your "life force energy" is low, out of balance, or disturbed by unsupportive energy, then you are more likely to get sick or feel stress. If your energy is balanced and you are free from energetic patterns that are "weighing you down", you are better equipped to support and sustain your happiness and health.
Reiki aims to improve the flow of energy and remove blocks similar to the goals of acupuncture or acupressure. It is a relaxing treatment that involves little to no physical touch, and it can be used as a complimentary therapy to traditional Western medicine. Throughout the session, natural healing vibrations are transmitted to your body - your job is simply to lay down and relax! Benefits of energy healing include deep relaxation, stress relief, improving emotional, physical and spiritual well-being, balancing chakras, and most important, supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself.
If this sounds really "out there" to you, you are not alone. This is definitely not something that was covered in your high school biology class. But the truth is that in my experience Reiki works, and it is becoming more and more available in "regular" places. I often see Reiki offered at beauty spas in my city, there are several hospitals who offer Reiki as an adjunct to surgery and other medical procedures to assist in pain reduction and healing, and even my local YMCA has started offering Reiki sessions to its members. I hope that going into the future we continue to normalize alternative therapies such as energy healing, and become more open to the idea of intertwining traditional medicine with these kinds of therapies for maximum holistic benefit to patients.
